- Class D: Operator License. An operator license is what most people think of as a 'regular' driver license. It allows you to drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or less. With an operator's license, you can tow a trailer with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less, but you cannot transport hazardous materials or drive a bus designed to transport more than 15 persons. An operator license allows you to drive a moped but not a motorcycle, 3-wheeled motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.
- Motorcycle License: A motorcycle license allows you to drive motorcycles, mopeds and 3 wheeled motorcycles. Most drivers with a motorcycle license also hold either an operator or commercial license, although, it is possible to hold a Motorcycle-only license which allows operation of a motorcycle but no other class of vehicle.
- 3-Wheeled Motorcycle: This license type allows you to drive a three-wheeled motorcycle but not a two-wheeled motorcycle or motor-driven cycle. If you take a motorcycle road test on a three-wheeled motorcycle, you are restricted to operating only a three-wheeled motorcycle. If you take a motorcycle road test on a conventional, two-wheeled motorcycle you can operate a three-wheeled motorcycle.
- Motor-driven Cycle License: This license type allows you to drive any moped, motor scooter, bicycle with motor attached and small motorcycle with no more than five (5) horsepower.
- Moped License: This license type allows you to drive a moped only. To be classified as a 'moped', a vehicle must meet all of the following:
- Not require the driver to shift gears.
- Have a motor not more than two (2) horsepower or 50 cc. in size.
- Not be able to go faster than 30 MPH on level ground.

Age Restrictions
- Youth Operators
- A driver must be at least 16 years of age to get a New Hampshire Driver License. Drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 will be issued a Youth Operator License which will expire on their 21st birthday. Drivers 16 and 17 years old may apply for a license only if they pass an approved Driver Education Program.
- Drivers under 18 years of age cannot get a commercial driver license and must observe the following restrictions:
- Shall not operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.
- During the first 6 months holding the license, shall not operate a motor vehicle with more than one passenger less than 25 years of age who is not a member of the driver's family unless accompanied by a licensed, responsible adult who is at least 25 years of age.
- Shall not operate a motor vehicle with more passengers than seat belts or safety restraints in the vehicle.
What is the difference between an “M2” & “M3” Endorsement?
Effective July 1, 2014 – Endorsement classifications:
- “M2” – Participants who successfully complete the Two Wheel Basic Class will receive an “M2” Endorsement. The “M2” Endorsement will only allow the Rider to operate a Two Wheel Motorcycle.
- “M3” – Participants who successfully complete the Three Wheel Basic Class will receive an “M3” Endorsement. The “M3” Endorsement will only allow the Rider to operate a Three Wheel Motorcycle.
- “M” – The “M” license will allow the Rider to operate both Two & Three Wheel Motorcycles.
- If you received your “M” Endorsement on or before June 30, 2013, you will be “Grandfathered In” and keep your “M” Endorsement.
- To receive an “M” Endorsement after June 30, 2013, you must obtain BOTH an “M2” and an “M3” Endorsement.
I want to learn on a scooter, do you have a scooter class for me?
Yes, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Motorcycle Program offers a Scooter Basic RiderCourse. The class will use scooters and upon successful completion, you will receive your motorcycle license. The scooter class is 15+ hours in length, the same as the motorcycle BRC. Please call us prior to purchasing a BRC class if you want to use a scooter. We MUST have a qualified Scooter Coach available for the class date you desire. We cannot always accommodate your first date of the request. Remember, you will be in a class with motorcycles and scooters. Presently the demand for scooter training is not sufficient to have your class filled entirely with scooters.
Can I use my scooter in the BRC?
No, only Program scooters. No personal scooters or motorcycles are permitted.

If your scooter is a 50 cc engine size or above, you will need a motorcycle license.

How long is the Two Wheel Course Basic RiderCourse ?

Our typical three day Two Wheel Course is 3 hours of classroom Friday evening, 5 hours driving Saturday morning & 3 hours of classroom on the same Saturday afternoon, Sunday has 5 hours driving in the morning with graduation between 12p – 1p
Our special two day Two Wheel Course is 3 hours of classroom each day in the mornings with 5 plus hours of driving each day in the afternoons. Your graduation is in the evening (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) of the second day.
Do I get a motorcycle license if I successfully complete the Two or Three Wheel Course ?
Getting your Class M2 or M3 License (effective July 1, 2016)
You must successfully complete both the written test and the riding skills evaluation in order to receive a MSF or Evergreen Safety Council course completion card and a Virginia DMV Motorcycle Class M2 or M3 Provisional License. No make-up testing or re-testing will be allowed (DMV rules).
The Virginia DMV Motorcycle Class M2 or M3 Provisional License is a temporary Class M2 or M3 license and allows you, if 19 years of age or older, to operate a motorcycle for 30 days. Simply take the DMV Provisional License to any Virginia DMV and exchange the Provisional License and your current car driver’s license for a new Virginia plastic license, only now with a M2 or M3 on it. We cannot make a plastic license at the Training Centers, so, you need to visit the DMV office – sorry. However, no written or driving test this time…. Your Certificate will waive BOTH the knowledge & skills test at any Virginia DMV for one year from the date issued.
- Students 19 years of age or older will be issued The Virginia DMV Provisional License which is a temporary Class M2 or M3 license and allows you to operate a motorcycle for 30 days.
- Students 18 years of age will not be allowed to operate a motorcycle with The DMV Provisional License – they will need to take the DMV Provisional License to DMV to have the M2 or M3 placed on their license.
- Students 17 years of age or younger will be issued The Virginia DMV Provisional License, However, they will still be required to wait the nine months and will nothave a 30-day class M2 or M3 temporary license to operate a motorcycle.
- Note: The Virginia DMV Provisional License expires 0ne (1) year from date issued. Please make every effort to have M2 or M3 placed on your license prior to expiration. After expiration, you will be required to take the entire course over if you allow The DMV Provisional License to expire.
Note: No other state will accept The DMV Completion Certificate /Provisional License or Virginia’s MSF card. You do not need a learner’s permit or a motorcycle driver’s license to take any one of our courses.
